Objective of the contest: The goal is to encourage constructive discussion and gain a better
understanding of the topic or the most appropriate solution to the issue being debated.
Learning Outcomes: Gaining broad, multi-faceted knowledge cutting across several disciplines
outside the learner's normal academic subjects. Increasing learner's confidence, poise, and self-
esteem.
The Academic Club & iThink organized the Battle of Wits & Words on 24th September 2024.
The participants spoke in favor of the motion and against the motion, the summary of their
viewpoint is mentioned as under :
AI is designed to handle repetitive tasks efficiently. As industries adopt AI for functions like data
entry, scheduling, and inventory management, many jobs that rely on these skills are at risk.
Businesses may prioritize AI to reduce costs and increase productivity. This can lead to
downsizing in roles that AI can perform, as machines can work faster and often more accurately
than humans. Sectors like manufacturing, transportation (e.g., self-driving vehicles), and
customer service (chatbots) are already experiencing significant job losses due to AI
advancements. As these technologies improve, the trend is likely to continue. Many workers may
lack the necessary skills to transition into new roles created by AI technologies. This gap can
lead to higher unemployment rates as traditional jobs become obsolete.
As AI takes over jobs, the benefits may disproportionately favor those who own and develop
these technologies, widening the economic divide and leading to further job losses in lower-
income sectors. AI can automate tasks that typically serve as entry points into the job market.
This could limit opportunities for young workers and those seeking to re-enter the workforce. As
AI becomes more integrated into various industries, businesses may evolve their standards and
practices, potentially phasing out roles that do not align with these new technologies. These
points highlight the potential risks of AI displacing jobs, emphasizing the need for proactive
measures to address these challenges.
Against The Motion :
While AI may automate certain tasks, it can also create new jobs that didn't previously exist.
Fields like AI development, maintenance, and ethics are emerging, requiring a skilled workforce.
AI is often designed to assist humans, enhancing their productivity rather than replacing them.
This can lead to higher job satisfaction and more meaningful work as AI takes over mundane
tasks.
AI can boost productivity and efficiency, leading to business growth and increased demand for
labor in various sectors. This growth can generate new job opportunities. As AI changes the
nature of work, there will be a shift in required skills. This can lead to upskilling and reskilling opportunities, allowing workers to transition into more complex and rewarding roles. Many jobs
require human intuition, creativity, and emotional intelligence—qualities that AI cannot
replicate. Professions in the arts, healthcare, and education will still require a human touch. AI
can drive economic growth by increasing efficiency and innovation, potentially leading to job
creation across various industries as new markets and opportunities arise. Previous technological
advancements have often resulted in job displacement initially, but they have also led to the
creation of new industries and job roles, suggesting a cyclical pattern rather than a linear decline
in employment. These points emphasize the potential for AI to complement human work, create
new opportunities, and drive economic growth, suggesting a more nuanced view of its impact on
employment.
