After giving some serious hook ups through guest sessions the International Business department of JIMS Rohini organized a session on Mental Health with an objective of telling the importance of mental health in student’s life. The resource person for the session was Ms Sheetal Agarwal (Founder, Clownselors and TedEx Speaker) who is a Sociologist/Social Anthropologist by Training, Lecturer by profession and a big clown at heart. The aim of this session was to create a free space for the students to bring out their inner clown and explore themselves through expression, performance and laughter.
Ms. Sheetal introduced the fundamentals of mental health and also discussed why concentrating on mental health is vital to our growth and persistence. She emphasised on the fact that we only focus on our bodies physically, but fail to even acknowledge our mental wounds in the first place let alone cater to them. Ms. Agarwal explained thoroughly, the difference between mental health issues and mental illness as people usually puzzle these two. She discussed the determinants of mental health and what good mental health looks like. She also talked about the early warning signs that should not be ignored, and must be acknowledged and worked upon in order to maintain a positive metal health. She highlighted many ways through which we can sustain a healthy mental life. She further helped students to understand the importance of laughter and different ways of making your inner self laugh.
Further she added; that come what may, only the people who choose to look at the brighter side of life despite all the distress can stay emotionally healthy. She also stressed on the fact that even staying happy all the time by simply ignoring and denying the troubles one is facing can be very toxic and lead to severe psychological issues later. So, it's very important to acknowledge and develop a sense of positivity through learning and acceptance as in the end we all have a choice to make the circumstances better by choosing what works best for us.
Overall, the session was very enlightening.
