VISIT BLOGThe concept of Goods and Services Tax (commonly known as GST) is a single tax on any supply of goods and services or both andis widely implemented in several countries of the world. The advantages posed by GST are numerous as it removes several inconsistencies observed in the implementation of indirect taxes between the centre and the state thus ensuring a uniform tax structure across the country. However, in the Indian context, GST was embroiled in several rounds of inconclusive talks, frequent disruption of parliamentary proceedings and vehement opposition by the parties on the passage of GST bill. While the ruling government was keen to implement GST as a part of economic reforms measurement program, the opposition parties thought it otherwise. For, they had their own inhibitions pertaining to the limitations based on pragmatism and which they claimed will see the disastrous consequences if GST was introduced in India. All this hullabaloo, took 9 years and finally the GST bill was passed in the year 2016. It is in this context, a seminar is organized by JIMS, wherein, industry stalwarts, academicians and several leading personalities will be sharing a platform to discuss the issues and challenges and the impact which GST will have as a part of the economic reforms measurement program brought about by the ruling government. In particular, the seminar aims to generate awareness among the undergraduate students of JIMS as they will don the mantle of leading the corporate world or of setting the business venture of their own. But one thing is sure GST will be there though its mechanism of implementation across the states may vary.
