The Spark of an Idea
During his college years, Naman was troubled by a ubiquitous yet often ignored pollutant—cigarette butts. Observing their careless disposal by peers, he delved into research and discovered the alarming environmental impact of cigarette waste. With toxins that take over a decade to decompose, these small remnants posed a significant threat. This realization planted the seed for an idea that would change the way cigarette waste was perceived and handled.
A Mission Born from Concern
In 2018, during a visit to a local market, Naman was struck by the sight of cigarette butts littering the streets. Realizing the absence of viable disposal solutions, he decided to take matters into his own hands. Teaming up with his elder brother, Vipul, an engineer, he began developing an innovative recycling process. This collaboration led to the establishment of Code Effort Private Limited, a company with a mission to turn cigarette waste into sustainable opportunities.
Beyond Profits: A Vision for Sustainability
Code Effort was not just a business—it was a call to action against an urgent environmental crisis. The company’s model aimed to address three core pillars:
- Environmental Impact: Mitigating pollution through innovative recycling.
- Economic Growth: Creating over 5,000 jobs for women artisans and ragpickers.
- Social Change: Educating communities about responsible disposal and sustainability.
Using a proprietary recycling process, Code Effort ensured 100% utilization of cigarette waste. The company’s unique approach decomposes tobacco into compost, converts paper into pulp for products like mosquito repellents, and transforms cellulose acetate fibres into stuffing for soft toys and cushions.
Overcoming Challenges: Persistence Pays Off
Naman’s journey was not without obstacles. Educating the public about cigarette waste, collecting flammable butts, and streamlining operations were formidable challenges. However, through persistence and innovation, Code Effort introduced VBins (Value Bins) to encourage proper disposal and simplify collection. Today, the company processes over 50 tonnes of cigarette waste monthly, with plans to scale further.
Recognized by the Limca Book of Records, India Book of Records, and International Book of Records, Naman’s efforts have set a benchmark in sustainable innovation.
Expanding Horizons
The success of Code Effort in India has opened doors to global expansion. The company has extended operations to countries like Bangladesh, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, and Vietnam, showcasing India’s leadership in sustainability and aligning with the "Make in India" initiative. By 2030, Naman aims to upcycle 400–500 tonnes of cigarette waste monthly while also launching Decor Earth Private Limited, a brand for sustainable products.
