Jagan Institute of Management Studies, Sector -5, Rohini, New Delhi.

Service sector is the lifeline for the social economic growth of a country. It is today the largest and fastest growing sector globally contributing more to the global output and employing more people than any other sector.

In advanced economies, the growth in the primary and secondary sectors are directly dependent on the growth of services like Banking, Insurance, Trade, Commerce, Entertainment etc. In alignment with the global trends, Indian service sector has witnessed a major boom and is one of the major contributors to both employment and national income in recent times. The services sector has been a major and vital force steadily driving growth in the Indian economy. While agriculture continues to be the primary employmentproviding sector, the services sector is in second place.

While world trade in services is dominated by the developed countries, emerging economies like China and India are now playing an increasing role. The economy has successfully navigated the turbulent years of the recent global economic crisis because of the vitality of this sector in the domestic economy and its prominent role in India’s external economic interactions.

Today, there are great challenges in front of service industry particularly for the marketer. It is more difficult and complex to market intangible services as compared to tangible goods. Further, customers today are becoming highly demanding and unless we use quality and technology to our advantage, marketing will be short lived.
